Kybella is a new product in aesthetics for the double chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholate, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is a bile acid that is normally produced by a combination of proteins produced by the liver that are in turn changed into deoxycholic acid by bacteria found in our intestines so sensitivity is extremely low. Kybella causes disruption of fat cell membranes, causing the fat cells to rupture and get permanently eliminated by the body. Skin does not become lax after treatment but adopts the new contour of the neck.
Most patients only need 2-4 treatments. Treatments are scheduled every 4-8 weeks. Kybella is carefully injected by a physician and the amount needed to inject is determined by the amount of fat that should be treated in the chin area. Very small areas of chin fat may require only one vial (2cc of product), while large chins may require up to five vials (10cc of product).
Recovery following Kybella depends on the patient. Most patients will have some burning or stinging for 30 minutes to a few hours following the treatment and may have redness for a few days. Other post-treatment reactions include bruising, moderate swelling for 1-2 weeks which is commonly experienced and generally is less extensive with subsequent treatments. The area of treatment may feel firm for several days to weeks and the area may be tender to touch for several days to weeks but is not typically severe enough to require prescription strength medication. Numbness to touch is also common and can last up to 4-6 weeks.
